Department Vision
Art and DT
Art and Design Technology is essentially a practical subject which encourages learners to recognise that the world around them has been created both by nature and by human intervention.
Learners have the opportunity to develop their designing and making skills as well as opportunities to progress and become an ambitious, capable learner, who is ready to learn throughout their lives. Importantly, they will build resilience when things go wrong and be able to learn from setbacks. They are taught healthy behaviours including positive mindset to help grow.
Introduction to the subject and it’s role as a disciplinary subject and within the AoLE
The four purposes are the shared vision and aspiration for every learner. We set high expectations for all, promote individual well-being, encourage critical thinking and they apply their prior learning to make progress in the subject areas.
Art – Expressive Arts AoLE
Art can engage, motivate and encourage learners to develop their creative and artistic skills to the full. Learners are encouraged to develop their appreciation for creative work of other people, but also their own creative and artistic skills. Learners have the opportunity to explore, refine and communicate idea.
DT – Science and Technology AoLE
The importance of Design and Technology in our modern world has been drivers of change in society, underpinning innovation and impacting on everyone’s lives economically, culturally and environmentally. As such, the Science and Technology Area of Learning Experience will be relevant in the opportunities for learners to encounter and the life choices that they make.

Curriculum
Year 7
AOLE – Expressive Arts
Exploring the ‘Elements of Art’. Creating artwork requires learners to develop and demonstrate control of a range of skills and an application of knowledge and practices and enables them to become curious and creative individuals.
Medieval is the theme for the Spring and Summer terms with a connection to Drama and Music.
Learners are taught to refine their work by exploring ideas, selecting and experimenting with appropriate media, materials, techniques and processes ensuring creative making is taking place and that learners are also able to be reflective in their recording of their personal presentation.
DT
AOLE – Science and Technology
Learners are beginning to apply their experiences, skills and knowledge to design and problem solve engineering design solutions in response to needs and wants of society.
Year 7 work in a carousel bases, they complete 5 different Design and Technology areas throughout the school year. They learn about the process of designing, making and evaluating products and become more confident and thoughtful in each of these aspects as they progress through school.
Year 8 and 9
Art
The skills and knowledge gained throughout Year 7 provide an excellent foundation for Year 8 and 9. Learners will build on their technical skills and use of the formal elements when creating their artwork. Students will produce work in a sketchbook and larger outside pieces.
Learners will record ideas and make connections to the formal elements and how these are used in the world around us. Learners also have the opportunity to work in a variety of media. Creating outcomes from designs and media developments.
DT
Year 8 and 9 work in a carousel basis, with learners studying 5 aspects of Design and Technology. Using creativity and imagination, learners design and make products that solve real and relevant problems within a variety of contexts, considering their own and others’ needs, wants and values. Learners take risks, becoming resourceful, innovative, enterprising and capable citizens. Through the evaluation of past and present design and technology, they develop a critical understanding of its impact on daily life and the wider world.
Year 10 and 11
Art
Learners will explore ideas, experiences and respond to a theme or issue of personal significance. They will look at different approaches to art and use a variety of different media, techniques and materials including drawing, painting, printmaking and mixed media.
Learners will explore their imaginative, experimental side in their creative outcomes while gaining a knowledge of different artists and analysing artworks.
